Element

Each sign belongs to fire, earth, air or water. Two signs of the same element understand each other without translation, because they process events the same way. Fire pairs comfortably with air, and earth with water. The remaining crossings are where friction lives. At 34 points, element is one of the two heaviest components in sun sign compatibility.

The aspect between the signs

Count the distance between two signs around the wheel and you get an angle. Four signs apart is a trine at 120°, the smoothest angle in astrology. Three apart is a square at 90°, the most abrasive. Six apart is an opposition at 180°, the classic attraction of opposites, with a genuine argument built in. At 36 points this is the heaviest component, and it does most of the work in any zodiac compatibility reading.

Modality

At the other end sits Taurus and Leo at 28%, the lowest score the formula can produce: two fixed signs at a square, with incompatible elements and rulers that classically dislike each other. Squares generally land between 28% and 40%, quincunxes between 36% and 48%.

Every sign paired with itself scores exactly 82%. Same element, same instincts, same blind spot: high, but never the highest, because two people who share a weakness have nobody to catch it.

Notice what that pattern tells you. With sun signs alone there are only seven possible relationships between two signs. Twelve signs, 144 combinations, seven distinct answers. That ceiling is real, and it is the honest limit of any zodiac love match based on birth dates alone.
