Mười hai con giáp, the Vietnamese zodiac, is a 12-year cycle of animals assigned to each birth year, combined with one of five elements in a 60-year super-cycle. It runs on the lunar calendar and closely follows the Chinese system — with one famous swap: Vietnam has a Cat where China has a Rabbit.

The Cat, Not the Rabbit: How Vietnam Differs from China

The Vietnamese zodiac tracks the Chinese one closely — same 12 slots, same order, same idea — but two animals changed on the way:

• Ox → Buffalo (Trâu). China’s zodiac ox becomes the water buffalo, the animal actually used in Vietnamese rice farming.

• Rabbit → Cat (Mèo). The most famous difference. Several theories exist — a possible mistranslation of the Chinese character for rabbit (卯, mǎo) into a near-homophone, or a distinct Southeast Asian tradition predating Chinese contact — but no single explanation is universally agreed on, and Vietnam has kept the Cat regardless. It’s a point of quiet national pride: Vietnamese speakers will readily tell you their zodiac has a cat where China’s doesn’t.

Every other animal — Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig — is shared with the Chinese zodiac unchanged.

The Five Vietnamese Elements zodiac and How to Calculate Yours

Alongside the 12 animals, Vietnamese astrology assigns one of five elements (ngũ hành) to each year: Metal (Kim), Water (Thủy), Wood (Mộc), Fire (Hỏa), Earth (Thổ).
