The signs run in a fixed order, so Spanish speakers often count them. Numbers: uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez, once, doce. Ordinals: primero, segundo, tercero, cuarto, quinto, sexto, séptimo, octavo, noveno, décimo, undécimo, duodécimo. Example: Aries es el primer signo del zodiaco y Piscis es el duodécimo, el último. (“Aries is the first sign and Pisces is the twelfth, the last.”) A sign’s número de la suerte is its lucky number.
How to say the zodiac signs in Spanish (Spain vs. Latin America)
Two Spanish sounds change depending on where you are, and they affect exactly two signs:
- Cáncer — KAHN-sehr in Latin America, KAHN-thehr in most of Spain (the c before e becomes a soft “th”).
- Piscis — PEE-sees in Latin America, PEES-thees in Spain (same rule, the c before i).
Everywhere else the pronunciation is the same. Two other sounds worth knowing: the g in Géminis is pronounced like an English h (HEH-mee-nees), and the j-style g in Sagitario gives you sah-hee-TAH-ryoh.
Note the written accents, too: only Géminis and Cáncer carry them. Signs people expect to be accented — Sagitario, Capricornio, Acuario, Escorpio, Piscis — take no accent mark at all.
Do the Spanish zodiac signs use different animals or symbols?
No — the animals and glyphs are identical across languages. El Toro is still the bull, el León is still the lion, and the glyph for Libra is the same set of scales you’d see on an English horoscope page. Only the names and grammar change from language to language; the symbolism behind each sign is shared across the whole zodiac tradition, Spanish included.
Zodiac animals in Spanish (Western and Chinese)
Searches for “Spanish zodiac animals” usually mean one of two things: the creature that stands for each Western sign, or the Chinese zodiac, which Spanish speakers call el horóscopo chino. Both are covered here. There is no separate Spanish zodiac. Spanish speakers use the same Western signs as everyone else.
The animals behind the Western signs
Seven of the twelve signs are animals or sea creatures. Aries is el carnero (the ram), Tauro is el toro (the bull), Cáncer is el cangrejo (the crab), Leo is el león (the lion), Escorpio is el escorpión or el alacrán (the scorpion), Capricornio is la cabra (the sea-goat), and Piscis is los peces (the fishes). The other five are not animals: Géminis is los gemelos (the twins), Virgo is la doncella or la virgen (the maiden), Libra is la balanza (the scales), Sagitario is el arquero (the archer, drawn as a centaur) and Acuario is el aguador (the water-bearer).

Zodiac sign grammar in Spanish: why it’s “soy Tauro”
In English you say “I’m a Taurus.” In Spanish you normally drop the article:
✅ Soy Tauro. (standard)
✅ Soy un Tauro testarudo. (casual, when you add a description)
❌ Soy un Tauro. on its own sounds unusual in careful Spanish.
The same holds for every sign: Soy Géminis, Es Escorpio, Somos Piscis. Two more quick rules. First, el signo (the sign) is masculine, so signs default to masculine agreement (un Leo, los Virgo). Second, writers differ on capitalization: you will see both Soy Leo and soy leo (see the spelling section below). One false-friend warning for the Cáncer section: sensible in Spanish means sensitive, not “sensible.”

A cusp is una cúspide. If you were born within a day or two of a changeover date, people say you were born en la cúspide of two signs: Nací en la cúspide de Tauro y Géminis. Changeover dates can move by a day depending on the year and your birth time zone, so for a cusp birthday a birth chart (carta astral) gives the exact answer.

Spelling matters: the accent in horóscopo is on the second o. It is pronounced oh-ROHS-koh-poh. Many people type it without the accent (“horoscopo”), but the accented form is the correct spelling.
